Biology: Why Is It Important for Your ‘Primary School’ Kid?

Our children should be enabled to discover, wonder and explore everything in the human anatomy that appeals to their minds.

Without a solid basis in bioscience, how can our children be empowered to at least stay healthy? Scientific temperament should be kindled at the tender ages when the mind is like a parched land, ready and willing to absorb every drop of water that comes in.

In most nations across the world, primary education suffers many challenges. Some, or perhaps most of them, arise from the absence of political foresightedness and the will to usher in radical changes in the system. If major changes are to be introduced, it could potentially impact teachers who have been in service for several years. Many of them may need to be retrained to address the needs of a new system. Therefore, the first resistance to change comes from the teaching community.

Rapid medical advances have impacted our lives, particularly in the last two decades or so. Even if that is the case, because of a vast number of bad habits developed by those who have no clue about biology, our health is still at risk. Most of the activities that we do on day to day basis can be done differently or in a better way if we have knowledge in biology; if we are aware how our bodies work. Specialist biology teachers for the primary schools

Teaching as a profession is pretty much distanced from most other professions. In the first place, handling young children and particularly getting them interested in learning bioscience or science, in general, is no mean task. Teachers must be knowledgeable, devoted to the cause and be involved knowing that their actions today, contribute significantly to shaping the future of these children.

The hard fact, however, is that there are fewer specialist bioscience teachers than necessary. Since no government can ‘produce’ science teachers at will, the apathy towards desirable reforms will continue, and there will only be excuses galore.

Time demands primary schools face

The specific syllabus is given to the schools, and the teachers are required to complete the syllabus within an allotted time frame. But this time frame does not factor in excursions (which causes serious disruptions in Australian schools particularly), impromptu assemblies and other extracurricular activities. Cumulatively, these disruptions leave teachers to decide what they can chop off from the syllabus. This approach is even more pronounced in subjects that the teachers are least comfortable, and mathematics traditionally is the first subject to suffer because teachers are either underconfident or have limited knowledge of the content. Science is the next, for the same or similar reasons.

Where do all these leave our kids?

As we have seen from the above discussion, there are several causes to inadequate bioscience education in our primary schools. But, where does that leave our kids? Should systemic inadequacies and inefficiencies put our kids at a huge disadvantage when they become adults and find themselves oblivious of what is going on in their own bodies or common principles or nature?

As individuals, we can hardly influence systemic changes and yet have the compulsion to ensure that our kids get the best they can in terms of quality education.
